Water issues show up in every degree of severity — a patch of lawn that stays soggy for days after a storm, water finding its way into a crawlspace, pooling in low spots, or soil so saturated it slowly kills off plantings that used to thrive. Groundwork Lawncare evaluates and corrects drainage problems for homes and businesses across Bel Air, MD.
How Groundwork Lawncare Approaches Drainage in Bel Air, MD
Solving a drainage problem starts with mapping where the water is coming from, where it's trying to go, and what's stopping it along the way. Rainfall runoff, water shedding off a neighboring hardscape, rising groundwater, and irrigation that's simply running too long each call for a different fix. Whenever we can, we walk the property during or right after rain, follow the surface flow, note where it pools, check what drainage already exists, and measure the grade to see how it's steering water around the site.
For water moving beneath the surface, a French drain is usually the right tool. It's a perforated pipe wrapped in gravel that pulls water out of the surrounding soil and routes it to a spot where it can be released safely. Getting this right means sizing the pipe for the volume it will actually carry, setting it at a depth that intercepts the water table, and picking a discharge point that can handle the flow without just creating a new wet spot somewhere else.
Surface-level water gets a different set of fixes. Channel drains set into low spots catch runoff before it pools and route it into buried piping. Where the ground itself is the problem — a sunken area or a slope that pitches toward the house — we bring in topsoil or engineered fill to correct the grade. Downspouts are often the single biggest contributor to wet trouble spots, so we frequently add underground extensions or surface-spread systems that disperse that water over ground that can actually absorb it.
